Dogs that are Rarer than Giant Pandas!

A litter of Glen of Imaal Terrier puppies were born in Britain at Granary Kennels, Hawkridge Hill in November. Never heard of this breed? It's pretty likely, these pups are more scarce than giant pandas!

Last year there were only 36 Imaal Terrier puppies registered, compared to 45,000 Labradors!

Owner and breeder of the terriers for the past 30 years Jane Withers said: “The breed is rare because there aren’t many to start with, and you can only have a litter every two years... They make good pets, but you have to be the right owner. They need someone very strong, and lots of walks, but they’re not so keen when it’s raining.”

The puppies take three to four years to mature and weigh around 30lbs when fully grown, similar to the size of a Basset Hound.

Click here for the full story and to watch an interview with Jane Withers!

The History of the Glen of Imaal Terrier

This dog is named the Glen of Imaal Terrier because the Glen of Imaal is where this breed originated, and due do its remote location the breed never really seemed to leave home. Thus why these perfect family dogs are not very well known.

These terriers were used for the "turnspit" a wheel used to rotate food over a fire or for churning butter. They were also used in hunting foxes and badgers out of their underground dens.

This Terrier's features include turned out feet, a unique head with folded over ears and a a unique head with bent over ears, called "rose or half-prick" ears and a soft undercoat.

Veterans Use Dogs to Cope with Anxiety

art.cindy.therapy.lw.jpg

Jo Hanna Schaffer is a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran, a former Army medic, Karen Alexander is a retired Air Force Capt, and Billerica is a resident in Massachusetts. What do these three women have in common? Each one suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and has tried every pill out there but only one thing worked: the comfort of a furry best friend.

But these aren't any dogs, these are service dogs trained especially for the purpose of aiding people with mental illnesses, from anxiety disorders to bipolar disorder to PTSD. These dogs are trained to recognize the signs of depression or an oncoming panic attack and to act accordingly. Some nuzzle their owner with their nose, or curl up close beside them to provide emotional comfort and stability.

The benefits that these dogs give their owners are priceless and so is the cost of their upbringing and rearing. Producing just one of these dogs can go as high as $20,000 because training is very time consuming. Fortunately organizations and professionals trainers can pass the cost along to corporate donations and give these dogs to owners who really need them for only a few hundred dollars.

["Alexander says her first service dog, Clover, helped her overcome social isolation. After retiring in 1994, Alexander had a nervous breakdown and became housebound. She wanted to stay in bed all day, but having the dog forced her to get out.

"It became such an asset in my life," Alexander says. "When I couldn't get out for me, I had to get out for the dog." ] Cnn.com/living

'Adopt A Pet' Day Is a Great Success!

The turnout for the 'Adopt A Pet Day' event in San Andreas, CA was an absolute hit at the Calaveras and Humane Society and county’s Animal Shelter this past Saturday, January 26th, 2008. The event went from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – two shelter cats were adopted and one shelter dog got to go home. Even “Snowball,” who had taken up residence for three days at the dog shelter after being lost, was found by her owners on Saturday.
Judy Telezinski, a main coordinator of this event, has been a Calaveras Humane Society volunteer for about two-and-a-half years; she also serves on the board. She does it because of her love for animals.

“Everybody wants to help these animals,” Telezinski said of her fellow volunteers. About 12 volunteers from the Calaveras Humane Society showed up and worked during Adopt-a-Pet day. Visitors were invited to enjoy hot dogs, soda. Many visited with animals; the held cats, played with dogs.
The awful truth is that in 2007, the shelter euthanized more than 500 cats and almost 200 dogs.

I personally think this type of event should happen more and should be promoted more. It's a terrible thing to think that so many wonderful pets have to be put down because the shelters fill up and no interested pet owners come forward to adopt these animals.
My heart goes out to the shelter volunteers who have to witness it every day. They are truly doing God's work.

Celebrities, Women in History and Dogs

Celebrities like Ashley Tisdale and Jessica Simpson weren't the first famous ladies to have a canine best friend. Some of the most famous women in history were dog lovers too!

Anne Boleyn had two dogs- Purkoy and Urian. " The name Urian means "devil's helper," and some pointed to her use of this name as evidence of witchcraft."

Mary Queen of Scots- had a Skye terrier given to her by a French princess.

Queen Henrietta Maria- went back into her house as it was being bombarded by shells and cannonballs to save her furry best friend!

Emily Dickinson- had a 16 year relationship with her Newfoundland dog given to her by her father.

Pet Law Changes in Manhattan

Watch out Manhattan! Animal control ordinance laws are being updated from their 1928 versions.

What are the proposed revisions:

- Every residence is only allowed 4 pets. But if you currently have more, you can keep them, but can not replace them.
-No livestock, wild, undomesticated or exotic animals
-Dog walkers must carry bags (for poo!) and must immediately dispose of the "said poo."
-Required $1 license fee and inoculations
-Citations will be given if debris or odors on their own property become a health hazard. (That would take a lot of poo!)
-Dogs caught running at large a second time must be spayed or neutered within 30 days, to make them less aggressive.

SCIENCE CAN NOW UNDERSTAND DOGS!!!

Artificial Intelligence researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary have been able to identify the similarities in barks in certain situation, and can understand them better than humans can!

These findings suggest computers might significantly help people comprehend animal communication.

Scientists tested artificially intelligent software on more than 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs. Six different kinds of barks were taped:

  • Barks for strangers were recorded when a researcher approached a dog's owner's home when the owner was away.
  • Barks during fights were recorded at dog training schools, when a trainer encouraged dogs to bite the glove on the trainer's arms and bark aggressively.
  • Barks for walks were recorded when owners behaved as if they were preparing to go for a walk with their dogs.
  • Barks for balls were recorded when owners held balls in front of dogs.
  • Barks during playtime were recorded when owners played tug-of-war or similar games with dogs.
  • Barks made when alone were recorded when owners tied dogs to trees in a park and then walked out of sight.

After analyzing digital versions of the barks, overall the computer program correctly identified the kinds of barks the dogs made 43 percent of the time — about the same as humans' 40 percent, said researcher Csaba Molnár, an ethologist at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary. The software identified 'walk' and 'ball' barks better than people, although people identified 'play' and 'alone' barks better than the software.

The program also could identify which dog made each bark 52 percent of the time. Molnár and his colleagues had previously found that people can not reliably distinguish between individual Hungarian sheepdogs by their barks at all.

"I'm pretty sure this could work with any animal vocal signals," Molnár told LiveScience.

Molnár thinks dogs are ideal for study because humans and canines have spent thousands of years living together. "At least you know what the humans intend in any communication between them and dogs," he explained. "When you have communication just between animals, it's much harder to study what they mean."

In future experiments, the researchers will compare barks from different breeds. Since these dogs were bred for different jobs, this could result in differences in their barks, Molnár said.

Molnár and his colleagues detailed their findings on January 15 in the journal Animal Cognition.

HOW FREAKIN' COOL IS THAT???

I think it's only a step away until we can have computers that literally translate what your dog is saying. No more guessing!
Man and his best friend will be able to communicate clearly and effectively!

Dogs and Cats need to keep Warm

Tips to keep them safe:

Only take dogs and cats outdoors when necessary because they can get frostbitten ears, noses and feet if left outside.

The two biggest threats to our pets: (haha get it!)

1) Hypothermia and 2) Dehydration

What to do:

For Inside Pets:

- Consider a sweater for short-coated breeds, avoid sweaters made of cotton

- Keep fireplaces screened and heaters out of reach as a pet may chew the cord or knock it over and cause a fire.

For outside pets:

-Give them thick old blankets or towels to snuggle up with

-Make sure they have food and water

-Consider installing a door, and make sure the "door" to their house is protected against wind

-Check on them regularly, to check for signs of hypothermia and to replace frozen water

Remember: Animals naturally found in warm temperatures can not adapt to severe drops in temperatures.

- Outdoor cats will climb under the hoods of cars for warmth, bang loudly on your car’s hood before starting the engine to give them a chance to move.

-Your car becomes a freezer in the winter-don't leave them inside of it.

After taking them on a walk:

-Avoid tiny cuts and cracked pads by towel or blow-dry after exposure to rain or snow.

Remember: chemicals used to melt snow and ice walkways can burn your pet

Dogs and Rabbits in Trouble in Australia

There's new threats to dogs and rabbits in Geelong, Australia: a lot of mosquitoes, a lot of grass seeds and the Pavo Virus.

The mosquitoes aid the spread of myxomatosis in rabbits. Vets at the Bellarine Animal Hospital stated, "Last year we had a few deaths but this year we are putting down six bunnies a day. The number is staggering."

Grass seeds are long sharp pointed seeds that have tiny barbs which make the seed puncture the skin and move through tissue. Once it is under the skin the body tries to eliminate it and pus forms that can swell into an abscess. Often the only time to remove the seeds is by surgery.

The Pavo virus also seems to affecting more dogs at an increasing rate.

What can you do to protect your pets?

The only option is to mosquito-proof hutches or keeping your rabbits indoors during dusk hours. However there is no way to 100% protect them. Local vets are recommending the Pavo booster for all dogs and to comb your dogs daily for grass seeds.

Zoo News: Snow Leopards

Check out the Dakota Zoo's new "big cat" exhibit!

There's Jerry the zoo's first snow leopard. Jerry is originally from the LA Zoo ( so he's probably a diva) and weighs in at 90 pounds. But to keep Jerry company are also two new mountain lion cubs about five months old.

The new Siberian Tiger/Snow Leopard Exhibit will cost about 1.2 million! All that money is going to make sure that visitors can see the big cats up as close as possible while not alarming them. Their enclosure will be about 30,000 square feet and will have specially-designed rocks, logs, and filtered pools and a private den area.

Hmmm, wonder what they're gonna do in there?

Click here to find out what else the Dakota Zoo has in store, and click here to make a donation (Remember it's tax deductible!!).

It's like Virtual Pets that are Real!!!

This gadget isn't exactly new, it was developed in Japan and finally came to the US in 2003- but it's still awesome! It's called The Bowlingual. It translates your dog's bark into six different categories that tell you what they're trying to say!Sad, happy, frustrated, on guard, needy and assertive/showing off!

The Bowlingual is pre-programmed with 200 different breeds of dog all listed on the Bowlingual website. But even if your breed isn't listed ( such as a newest trendy cross-breeds) this gadget can still work by entering your dog's size and muzzle shape.

Buyer Beware: It doesn't quite work for puppies...yet.

PETA exploits Jamie Lynn Spears

I have to say that I respect PETA, I do, but they are shameless when it comes to publicity!

PETA launched a new "Sex Talk" commercial comparing unwanted teen pregnancies to animal spaying and neutering. OK, so that's not SO bad, but where are they airing it? Jamie Lynn Spears' hometown-you clever little minx PETA.

The 30-second ad features a daughter asking her mother, "What if I get pregnant?" The mother replies, "Pop out all the kids you can...If it has a pulse, you should be wrapped around it!" The commercial's main message: "Parents shouldn't act this way. Neither should people with dogs and cats. Always spay or neuter."

In a statement PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk said, "Just as Lynne Spears is under scrutiny because of her underage daughter's pregnancy, people who fail to spay and neuter their animals should also be feeling the heat."

But at least PETA's heart is in the right place. Read on for facts taken from PETA's website:

-the reason for the human-animal link, "one female cat can create 420,000 cats in just seven years, and an unneutered male cat can father limitless litters of kittens."

"Unwanted dogs and cats who never make it to animal shelters are abandoned and left to fend for themselves on the streets, where they are often subjected to cruelty and suffer from starvation, diseases, or injuries."

Leave No Pet Behind

The Real Estate market is down and there are lots of houses being abandoned with no one to take care of them, along with the pets left behind in those houses.

Cecily Tippery is a real estate agent who most recently walked into an empty house only to find three dogs tied up in the backyard, abandoned by their owners. Unfortunately, when someone can't take care of their house, their pets become nothing more but added stress. In her 17 years of experience Tippery has seen litters of kittens, birds, goldfish and turtles.

Even though Tippery ( being the good pet-lover she is!) tries to take home and care for every animal she finds it can be tricky. Legally, pets are personal property and can not be taken unless abandoned for at a minimum 18 days. But don't worry, she comes back to the houses and feeds them and checks on them in the meantime.

Miley Cyrus' Dogs #1 on Most Eligible Pets List

Animal Fair Magazine's readers recently voted Miley Cyrus' pets, Roadie and Loco the most eligible pets of 2008! Why? Editor Wendy Diamond speculates because these are the only two pooches that could get tickets to her sold-out Hannah Montana concerts!

"All the time we hear about the sexiest men alive, the best- and worst-dressed celebrities or the most beautiful people," Diamond said. "What about the pets?"

Who did Roadie and Loco beat on the list? Jake and Bill, terriers that cuddle with Glenn Close and Likely Licks, and Teddy, the mini goldendoodle sidekicks of Perez Hilton.

Dogs Help Us

There are so many ways that dogs help us. They can help the blind see, give therapy to those sick in hospitals, can relieve stress in their owners just by being themselves and even do laundry! But dogs can also help save our lives by detecting oncoming sickness.

Recent studies have shown that some dogs have a natural ability to detect impending seizures and hypoglycemic episodes. Just two years ago studies started to investigate the possible ability of dogs to identify breast and lung cancer on a patient's breath.

Connie, the Dog that does Laundry!

This is Connie the canine companion of animal behaviorist Hazel Carter. When Hazel was stricken with severe arthritis in her back she could no longer do certain household chores. What was there to do? Why not train her dog, Connie to do it for her?

Connie bring out her own dish bowl during dinnertime, if she sees a certain object out of place, she can put it back and she can even pick up bags at the store and do laundry! Although, because Connie is color-blind (like all other dogs) she can't exactly separate darks from lights, she can load the laundry machine, put in a detergent ball and press the start button with her paw!

Veterinary Medicine of 2007

Well, it's officially over. The end of 2007 was saluted by a graveyard of last year's Christmas trees bordering my street, waiting for the garbage truck.

I'm saying my good-bye to 2007 by saluting the great veterinary accomplishments made last year.

1)Melanoma Vaccine

The first therapeutic vaccine of any kind (human or otherwise) to guard against cancer approved in the United States.

2)Dental Disease Vaccine

Protects against Periodontal disease which is the most commonly diagnosed disease in veterinary medicine. It affects 85 percent of dogs older than 3, most often in small-breeds likePugs or Pekinese.

Dogs that have good oral health live 15 percent longer or an average of two years.

3)New Vaccine Delivery System

No needles!Instead a syringe can deliver vaccines directly to the animal's muscles, making it easier on everybody.

Tired of struggling with your cat meds? Profender (from Bayer) is the first de-wormer that can be applied just to your cat's skin!

4)New Drug for Weight Loss

We've had them forever, it was only a matter of time eh?

5)New Breed Specific Food

Royal Canin and Iams came out with thier line of food for specific breeds of dogs and cats. So far they've developed formulas for boxers, bulldogs, Chihuahuas, dachshund, German shepherds, Golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, poodles, Shih Tzus and Yorkshire terriers.

6)Whole Meals

Now your dog's food is for the mind and the body. You can feed your dog a biometrically designed, one-piece meal from Mars Veterinary. The different textures within the meal piece is packed with nutrition and satisfies your dogs animal instincts.

7)New Pain Medications for Cats

Last year, new medication was approved for arthritis in cats.

8)Genetics Test

Papers-Smapers. Let science tell you exactly what breed your dog is!

9)*My Favorite* Probiotics for Gastrointestinal Health

In English? Put some of these new sprinkles in your dog's food and that bad breathe (you know, the one that comes from the other end) will be no more! THANK YOU!

Good bye 2007!
What could 2008 bring us?!
