Show Your Love for Cats and Dogs

Everyone loves pets, well at least everyone reading this blog! But not everyone can be a pet owner. There might be restrictions with your housing, or someone you live with is allergic, but don't let minor things like that deter you from showing your love for animals!

So if you feel like doing a selfless good deed like Clifford up there, here are some ideas:

* Contact your local rescue groups if there are any bills on the table regarding animals in your community or state. If there are any, find out the issues and send a letter to your representative.

* Volunteer at a rescue organization

* Donate materials to shelters and rescue organizations

* Make a donation of money to a national rescue group

* Volunteer to forward "help find a new home for" type emails from a reputable rescue organization.

* Think about naming an animal rescue organization in your Will.

* Volunteer at a local animal shelter

* Consider fostering a pet belonging to an active service member, about to be deployed

* If you work in a medical setting, a nursing home or rehabilitation center look into setting up a program using therapeutic animals.

* If you know someone facing illness, divorce, or foreclosure care for their pet until they can get settled again.

* The next time you invite a friend or relative for the weekend, invite their pet as well.

'Adopt A Pet' Day Is a Great Success!

The turnout for the 'Adopt A Pet Day' event in San Andreas, CA was an absolute hit at the Calaveras and Humane Society and county’s Animal Shelter this past Saturday, January 26th, 2008. The event went from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – two shelter cats were adopted and one shelter dog got to go home. Even “Snowball,” who had taken up residence for three days at the dog shelter after being lost, was found by her owners on Saturday.
Judy Telezinski, a main coordinator of this event, has been a Calaveras Humane Society volunteer for about two-and-a-half years; she also serves on the board. She does it because of her love for animals.

“Everybody wants to help these animals,” Telezinski said of her fellow volunteers. About 12 volunteers from the Calaveras Humane Society showed up and worked during Adopt-a-Pet day. Visitors were invited to enjoy hot dogs, soda. Many visited with animals; the held cats, played with dogs.
The awful truth is that in 2007, the shelter euthanized more than 500 cats and almost 200 dogs.

I personally think this type of event should happen more and should be promoted more. It's a terrible thing to think that so many wonderful pets have to be put down because the shelters fill up and no interested pet owners come forward to adopt these animals.
My heart goes out to the shelter volunteers who have to witness it every day. They are truly doing God's work.
