Pet Grooming Tips from Experts!

Want the secrets of pet stylists?

Here are some tips from some of the top pet groomers to give you an idea of how you can get that "fresh from the salon" look for your pets.

* How often should I bathe my dog?

Almost everything we do with or to our pets should be carefully considered along with what breed it is, but commonly a pet should be bathed every 6 weeks, more than that and you can leave the dogs hair and skin dry.

* Is it OK to bathe the dog outside with the garden hose?

Would you like to get washed with a garden hose? Give them a nice luke warm wash in a tub. And always keep the water out of their ears, and don't spray them in the face. Always wipe down their face with a wet cloth, and do the rest of the body with a sprayer.

* Do I have to use a special shampoo for my pet, or can I just use my own shampoo?

DO NOT use human shampoo on a pet. Keep in mind that anything you put on a pet's coat goes in their mouth because they lick themselves. There's dog shampoo for a reason.

* Is it OK to dry my pet after a bath with my hair dryer?

Only if you keep is far away and at a very low level. Be very careful not to burn them.

* Can I just let the sun dry the dog without using a dryer?

If it's hot outside why not? A good rule of thumb is if you would be comfortable drying off in a wet t-shirt outside-don't make your dog do something you couldn't stand.

* Does my dog really need conditioners or finishing sprays?

If you're talking about a NEED and not a WANT, then no, finishing sprays are not a need, but conditioner is. Think of it as lotion, and how much damage can happen to skin when it's not moisturized for long periods of time.

* How often should I bathe my cat?

Lucky for all cat owners, cats clean themselves, so if your kitty is has a clean bill of health it should have no problem taking care of the hygiene issue. However, as they get older they're going to start needing more help.

Remember, cats are not dogs, so bathes aren't so important as brushing is. Brushing distributes the cat's natural oils evenly. Depending on whether you cat is a short hair or long hair, brush it once or a couple times of week.

* What's the best way to give a cat a bath?

Did you know that cats really aren't scared of water? It's the SOUND of the water that freaks them out. So try to gently cup the water over them until they're fully wet ( loud splashing note allowed).

Now that you know some of the tricks of the trade, prepare with a well-stocked home pet grooming kit: remember, depending on whether you have a dog or cat you may not need all the things listed here.

* Slicker brush: An all-purpose brush with wiry teeth that's ideal for brushing most dogs' coats between visits to a professional groomer.

* Nail clippers or nail grinder

* FURminator tool and de-shedding shampoo and solution: The FURminator de-shedding tool removes loose hair and undercoat. The shampoo and solution help loosen the undercoat for easier removal. (Note: The FURminator is not recommended for use with all dog breeds, including many terriers, or naturally curly-haired breeds such as poodles and bichons.)

* Shedding comb: A comb that penetrates into the undercoat to loosen mats and to collect loose top hairs.

* Bristle brush: For finishing; a soft brush that stimulates the skin and helps distribute oils evenly.

* Flea comb: Small comb with fine teeth to trap fleas.

* Toothbrush and toothpaste: Dogs will appreciate the beef- or chicken-flavor toothpaste made just for them.

* Dog shampoo and conditioner: Make sure to get products made just for dogs, with appropriate pH-levels for canine skin.

New Technology by Eureka for Pet Owners

So you want to have some fun in the sun while your cat stays at home? Of course, like any responsible pet owner you get someone to look after your cat, pet it, feed it, make sure there's water in their bowl, but do you ever ask a pet-sitter to vaccuum while you're away?

Chances are probably not, so while you still have a healthy little kitty you now also have a huge furball that used to be your home. That's exactly why Eureka will be introducing the Boss 4D Pet Fresh Vacuum. A 25 pound high-powered upright with rubber teethed "Pet Power Paw" power brush to removing pet hair from furniture AND a sealed HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of dander and dust with Arm & Hammer baking soda embedded into the vacuum's filter helps combat pet smells.

Definetely a high-end product--with a high end price: $125

Sound worth it?

Summer Travel with your Pet Cat!

It's summer time! That mean's its time for (even higher gas prices) and travel. But traveling with pets can be tricky, so it's important to be properly prepared. Here are some tips on traveling with your cat(s).

1) Plastic or wire pet carrier

DON'T get a cardboard carrier, these can be chewed through quickly so the plastic and wire carriers are worth the investment. Either way, you definitely need to place your cat in a carrier, because they're sly little devils and you don't want them slipping in and out behind the seats, or under the brake pedal.

2) Place the carrier on a seat next to you if you can. If you place the cat on the floor the noises of the car can be scary for your feline. Make sure the cat is secured in a car seat and can feel the air conditioning. You want to make traveling as stress free for your cat as possible, it is going to be stuck in a box for a while.

3) Food, water, litter, a pan, a scoop and disposable bags. Pets are like our children, we would bring the same things if we were traveling with an infant. ( litter excluded)

Health Tips: Overcoming Fat and Diabetes in our Dogs and Cats

Obesity in pets is a rising cause of health problems in the US today. What can you do to make sure your pet stays healthy? Here are some pet health care tips.

Dogs:

Slow and Steady Wins the Race:
Be careful not to get excited when your pup goes through a growth spurt and over feed him. Slow and steady is best for a dog's orthopedic health. Instead of feeding your growing puppy nutrient-packed food, vets recommend adult food instead.

Too much of a Good thing can be Bad:
Vitamins and supplements always sound like a good idea, but giving your dog too much may cause nutritional imbalances.

Dieting Tips:
If your dog is already overweight, and you want to help him shed sound pounds, help your dog feel full by substituting part of his meal with green beans or plain canned pumpkin. Both are rich in fiber, not in calories.

Cats:

The "Catkins" Diet
To ward off diabetes in your feline try "the catkins diet." 40 to 45 percent protein, 40 to 45 percent fat, and only 3 to 5 percent carbohydrates. You can also try canned cat foods which are closer to this ratio than dry. It may be more expensive than dry food, but your cat's health is worth it!

No Crash Dieting!
Never make your cat "fast." Not feeding your cat within 24 hours may result in a life-threatening situation.

Pet Care Tip: Masking sure your Dog Collar or Cat Collar Fits

How would you like a leather or plastic band around your neck 24/7? How much would you like it if it was just the littlest bit too tight? Ouch right? Well today's post is all about how to make sure your pet collar fits PROPERLY.

If you can't bring your pet into a pet supply store to try on collars, than make sure to buy more than one, you can always return one later during your next trip.
You don't want a collar that's loose enough to slip over your pet's head, be lost or loose enough to catch on something that might choke your pet.

Choose a collar made of a material that is soft and comfortable. Test: wrap it around your own wrist, how does it feel?

Remove the collar and any other training products that attached to your dog at night, so they can get a good night's sleep.

Check your pet's collar every day by making sure your fingers can fit easily, but snugly, between the collar and your pet's neck. This is especially important for growing pets.

The Snowball Effect

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, thousands of animals were lost or abandoned. The story of a distraught boy whose pet dog, Snowball, was confiscated by a police officer as he boarded a bus out of New Orleans, touched the hearts of those who saw it. While the boy cried out repeatedly for the dog and became so distressed that he was sick, Snowball lunged to get at the bus. So moved were those who saw television footage of this scene that thousands of dollars were raised in reward money to find Snowball and reunite him with his owner. Although, sadly, this has yet to happen, Snowball's unknown fate highlighted the plight o New Orleans' family pets. On many of the buses leaving afterward, pets went, too.

Wheelchairs for Disabled Pets

A friend recently sent me this great article "Wheelchairs keep disables pets moving"

Our pets always brighten our day and make living a little more enjoyable, so when they're sick or need more care as they get older it's our time to return the favor.

That's what "Wheelchairs keep disabled pets moving" was all about.

Here's a little excerpt:

Eddie and Leslie Grinnell, founders of Eddie's Wheels, built their first pet wheelchair in 1989 when their 10-year-old Doberman, Buddha, lost the use of her rear legs because of disc disease and spinal problems.

Their veterinarian, impressed by Buddha's revived mobility and vitality, started referring others to the Grinnells. In 1998, they started their own business.

Since launching the business, Eddie's Wheels has shipped carts worldwide — the largest to a 220-pound Saint Bernard in Great Britain — and has made wheelchairs for several cats, a ferret, alpacas, goats, sheep, a rabbit and a possum.

They even keep a supply of tiny wheels on hand for a gerbil or hamster.

I would love to see a picture of a gerbil or hamster using a set of these tiny wheels..anyone have a picture?

Elephants aren't the only Artists!

I found this great story in the Seattle times

When Tara McClung went out of town for about a week two years ago, the last thing she expected to find when she came home was her cat's new hobby.

Her cat Engine had discovered wire sculpting.

McClung, of Pompey, N.Y., said Engine likes to take floral wire and bend it into various shapes by using his teeth and paws. Sometimes he even bends the wire into tiny loops.

Engine is among 10 animal artists whose work will be on display at the second annual Pawcasso art show Friday in Syracuse.

Engine's work in Pawcasso is the only wire sculpture. The other artistic cats, dog, rabbit, parrot and penguin all prefer painting. Each animal has its own artistic methods and preferences, according to Debbie Tobin, penguin zookeeper at Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse.

Five of Tobin's tips on training your animal to be creative

Look at your pet's natural behavior dog like to use their mouths, primates their hands and birds their beaks and feet.

Don't force your pet

When you train animals, use a lot of positive reinforcement.

Take baby steps. Break down the entire creative process into little pieces. When painting, for example, first let the animal touch the brush. Next time, teach your pet to hold the brush and work your way up to adding paint. Keep your sessions to about 10 minutes so it's not overwhelming for the animal.

Be patient. If something is not working, take a step back and try again. If your pet can do one little thing, be thankful and reward them.

California Bill to Neuter or Spay Your Pets!

Just a friendly reminder.

In Los Angeles, California Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa just signed one of the nation's toughest laws on pet sterilization.

All dogs and cats must be spayed or neutered by the time they are 4 months old, unless you are a breeder!

Time to Check your Cat's or Dog's Teeth!

February is the month that veterinarians try to spread awareness of the importance of dental health for your pet! The number one cause of heart diseases in the adult animals is bacterial infection from periodontal disease.

The best thing we can do for our pet is keep their mouth in good condition.

Here are some different ways on how to do that:

1)Take your pet to the your local vet to have a professional cleaning done.

2) Brush your pet's teeth yourself with a toothpaste made from baking soda. WARNING: do not use human products because fluoride can cause your pet to be sick.

3) Use a special gel that can be applied weekly after a dental cleaning to help keep the teeth protected.

4) There is also a new vaccination that can guard against most common bacteria in the mouth, but does not help with existing pre-conditions.

Find Toto!

A brother sister duo from Brentwood created FindToTo.com. This brainchild was born when one of the website creator's own pets went missing. After posting fliers, hitting the pavement and the telephone he could only reach about four people.

All pet owners know that these furry guys are like our children, so it can be really scary when they get lost and there seems to be no one to help. FindToTo.com has helped pet owners find their pets within hours and one case, in minutes!

For a fee, pet owners can sign up to have FindToto.com target homes within a certain radius of where the lost pet was last seen. Then, hundreds of phone calls are sent out with a description of the pet and contact information. The cost depends on how big a radius an owners wants--from the 250 nearest homes to up to 5,000 houses. Prices start at $60 and go up to $500.

Sex (kind of), Lies and Your Pet!

If you're a parent you're probably guilty of this, and if you're not then its probably been done to you! Simple little white lies to explain the universe, simply because it's easier than going into the details.

Why do parents do this?

What they mean: Eat your vegetables because it is part of a well-balanced meal.
What they say: Eat grapes, they make your eyes pretty.

What they mean: Don't buy candy and ice cream because it's a waste of money and sugar rots your teeth.
What they say: The ice cream man puts drugs in the candy. (Well at least that's what my mom said!)

And I've also heard this little white lie: For every one human year, a dog ages seven years.

I admit I too have fallen victim to this vicious vicious lie. But if this were true that would mean that in one of our human years, when the dog is technically only a seven year old-they hit puberty and are able to procreate? Those are some hulk-like hormones!

But there is a way to measure how old your pet is! The LeBeaus system ( named after its French founder) determines the age of the dog in human years based on what happens to them biologically.

Human Years vs. Dog/Cat Years

1 15- because they hit puberty
2 24- full maturity

Then, for every human year after that, the dog/cat would age 4 years per one human year.

However, this would be pretty hard to explain to a four year old who just got a new puppy. Then you would have to explain puberty and "procreation"...... Hmm.. maybe those white lies aren't so bad after all! Hey we all turned out fine right?

Pet Law Changes in Manhattan

Watch out Manhattan! Animal control ordinance laws are being updated from their 1928 versions.

What are the proposed revisions:

- Every residence is only allowed 4 pets. But if you currently have more, you can keep them, but can not replace them.
-No livestock, wild, undomesticated or exotic animals
-Dog walkers must carry bags (for poo!) and must immediately dispose of the "said poo."
-Required $1 license fee and inoculations
-Citations will be given if debris or odors on their own property become a health hazard. (That would take a lot of poo!)
-Dogs caught running at large a second time must be spayed or neutered within 30 days, to make them less aggressive.

Dogs and Rabbits in Trouble in Australia

There's new threats to dogs and rabbits in Geelong, Australia: a lot of mosquitoes, a lot of grass seeds and the Pavo Virus.

The mosquitoes aid the spread of myxomatosis in rabbits. Vets at the Bellarine Animal Hospital stated, "Last year we had a few deaths but this year we are putting down six bunnies a day. The number is staggering."

Grass seeds are long sharp pointed seeds that have tiny barbs which make the seed puncture the skin and move through tissue. Once it is under the skin the body tries to eliminate it and pus forms that can swell into an abscess. Often the only time to remove the seeds is by surgery.

The Pavo virus also seems to affecting more dogs at an increasing rate.

What can you do to protect your pets?

The only option is to mosquito-proof hutches or keeping your rabbits indoors during dusk hours. However there is no way to 100% protect them. Local vets are recommending the Pavo booster for all dogs and to comb your dogs daily for grass seeds.
