Show Your Love for Cats and Dogs

Everyone loves pets, well at least everyone reading this blog! But not everyone can be a pet owner. There might be restrictions with your housing, or someone you live with is allergic, but don't let minor things like that deter you from showing your love for animals!

So if you feel like doing a selfless good deed like Clifford up there, here are some ideas:

* Contact your local rescue groups if there are any bills on the table regarding animals in your community or state. If there are any, find out the issues and send a letter to your representative.

* Volunteer at a rescue organization

* Donate materials to shelters and rescue organizations

* Make a donation of money to a national rescue group

* Volunteer to forward "help find a new home for" type emails from a reputable rescue organization.

* Think about naming an animal rescue organization in your Will.

* Volunteer at a local animal shelter

* Consider fostering a pet belonging to an active service member, about to be deployed

* If you work in a medical setting, a nursing home or rehabilitation center look into setting up a program using therapeutic animals.

* If you know someone facing illness, divorce, or foreclosure care for their pet until they can get settled again.

* The next time you invite a friend or relative for the weekend, invite their pet as well.

Pet Care Services Directory

Why is Doggie Daycare so important? You could always just leave them alone in the house right? Tied up somewhere in the backyard? With a friend?

These are all good (cheap) solutions, but what's easy might not be what's best for your pet. Daycare is important for the same reasons children's daycare is. It teaches your pet important social skills, which is especially important during early years. Plus, your pet's individual needs can be better met by professionals. Hyper dogs will have an outlet to let out all their energy, instead of having it all pent up only to be released when they see you at the end of your long work day.

Doggie Daycare Directory

Is a great great place to find out the best doggie daycares in your state. Click on the link above, then on what state you're in. You'll be directed to a list of local doggie daycare facilities.

Tip: To make sure you pick the center that fits you and your pet, try visiting the center before hand to watch the staff in action and get a tour of the facilities.

Pet Related Services: Find a Groomer

Grooming your pet isn't just about looks, it's mainly about keeping your furry friend healthy.Weekly bathing is a must, but is isn't the only thing that pet owners should do.

Grooming stimulates skin health and helps control parasite invasion.

But you knew that didn't you smartie?

But do you know how to find one? A-ha! that's the always the hard part!

http://www.planet-pets.com/dggroom.htm

Is a another great Planet-Pets.com website designed to find dog grooming businesses, in every state. And once you find your state, here are some questions that the Humane Society suggests you ask before taking your pet there:

  • Is the facility well-lit?
  • Does it look and smell clean?
  • Does the staff appear knowledgeable and caring? Do they handle pets gently?
  • Are cages adequately sized? Are dogs and cats caged in separate areas?
  • Are pets monitored regularly to prevent overheating during blow-drying?
  • Does the groomer keep complete pet records (including grooming, medical, vaccination, and emergency contact information)?

Unbelievable Lion Cub Renuion

Read first!

The first thing you need to look at is the still photo below. Then watch the video. There's no sound on the video unfortunately.
These 2 guys reared this lion from a baby in England but the authorities would not allow them to keep it once it reached maturity so they were
forced to give it up, they took it back to Africa and placed it in a wildlife sanctuary, a year later they went to see it and were told it would not remember them. What happens next is incredible and will melt your heart....

Find a Pet Sitter In Your Local Area through Planet-Pets Services Directory!

http://www.planet-pets.com/petsits.htm is a great way to find local pet-sitters fast.

Once you find a pet sitter in your area, the Humane Society suggests you ask the following:

  • Can the pet sitter provide written proof that she has commercial liability insurance (to cover accidents and negligence) and is bonded (to protect against theft by a pet sitter or her employees)?
  • What training has the pet sitter received?
  • Will the pet sitter record notes about your pet, such as his likes, dislikes, fears, habits, medical conditions, medications, and routines?
  • Is the pet sitter associated with a veterinarian who can provide emergency services?
  • What will happen if the pet sitter experiences car trouble or becomes ill? Does she have a backup?
  • Will the pet sitter provide related services such as in-home grooming, dog walking, dog training, and play time?
  • Will the pet sitter provide a written service contract spelling out services and fees?
  • If the pet sitter provides live-in services, what are the specific times she agrees to be with your pet? Is this detailed in the contract?
  • How does your pet sitter make sure that you have returned home?
  • Will the pet sitter provide you with the phone numbers of other clients who have agreed to serve as references?

Remember, you wouldn't trust your kids to just anyone, and you should do the same for your pets.

Paris Hilton Breaks the Law... Again

Wow big surprise right? I kid, I kid.

But seriously, this (former) heiress thinks she can get away with anything.

How did police find out she had an illegal 17 dogs at her residence?
Did they do surveillance?
Send in an undercover team?
Bug her backyard?
Nope.

She openly admitted to it while on the nationally televised Ellen Degeneress show. Smart one!

Time to Check your Cat's or Dog's Teeth!

February is the month that veterinarians try to spread awareness of the importance of dental health for your pet! The number one cause of heart diseases in the adult animals is bacterial infection from periodontal disease.

The best thing we can do for our pet is keep their mouth in good condition.

Here are some different ways on how to do that:

1)Take your pet to the your local vet to have a professional cleaning done.

2) Brush your pet's teeth yourself with a toothpaste made from baking soda. WARNING: do not use human products because fluoride can cause your pet to be sick.

3) Use a special gel that can be applied weekly after a dental cleaning to help keep the teeth protected.

4) There is also a new vaccination that can guard against most common bacteria in the mouth, but does not help with existing pre-conditions.

Find Toto!

A brother sister duo from Brentwood created FindToTo.com. This brainchild was born when one of the website creator's own pets went missing. After posting fliers, hitting the pavement and the telephone he could only reach about four people.

All pet owners know that these furry guys are like our children, so it can be really scary when they get lost and there seems to be no one to help. FindToTo.com has helped pet owners find their pets within hours and one case, in minutes!

For a fee, pet owners can sign up to have FindToto.com target homes within a certain radius of where the lost pet was last seen. Then, hundreds of phone calls are sent out with a description of the pet and contact information. The cost depends on how big a radius an owners wants--from the 250 nearest homes to up to 5,000 houses. Prices start at $60 and go up to $500.

An Orgasm and Fish

"Fish That Fake Orgasms" is a great book that dishes on all the weird mating rituals in the animal kingdom. Here are a few facts from the book featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine:

Sheep Love More Cushion for the Pushin!
-The fattest of one type of sheep mate with the most males since males know they'll likely bear healthy offspring.

Butterflies know how to claim their territory!
-After mating, some male butterflies cover females with an antiaphrodisiacal dust that deters other males. ( I wish I could do that!!!)

Ewwwwww...
-Female goldfish attract potential mates by peeing. Their urine contains pheromones detectable by males.
( Is R Kelly part goldfish?)

Animal Shelter: Share the Love

I love puppies. I love kittens. Basically, everything is better when its tiny, cute and small. BUT, there are so many older pets that need a home!

The Animal Center in Santa Maria is inviting the public to spend some quality time with some of these needy animals in their "Share The Love" pet adoption event.

"Over a hundred animals up for adoption right now," said Stacy Crump, Commumity Outreach Coordinator."We encourage people to come down take a look at what we have spend some quality time with that animal to make sure you are making the right decision, and make sure that dog or cat is right for you're family," said Stacy.

All you need to do is spend a day playing with adorable pets, fill out an application and take your pick!

"The last thing we want is one of these guys to get comfortable in a home and have to come back," comments Stacy as she pet's Sam, a pet up for adoption.

Santa Barbara County shelters hope to becoming a no kill animal shelter, but that can only happen with YOUR HELP!

Forget those yucky chalky hearts, give someone the gift of a furry best friend!

Check your 2008 Calendar! Chinese New Year & Zodiac:

It's Chinese New Year and we salute: All Rats!

So if you were born in the year of the rat meaning: 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960,1948.... etc This is your year!

Here is what Astrology.com has for people born under the sign of the rat:

Though the Western rat is reviled as little more than a bottom-dwelling disease carrier, this animal is viewed much differently in the East. The Eastern rat is revered for its quick wits and its ability to accrue and hold on to items of value; rats are considered a symbol of good luck and wealth in both China and Japan. Clever and quick-witted, the Rat of the Chinese Zodiac is utterly disarming to boot. Possessed of excellent taste, this Sign flaunts its style at every turn. Its natural charm and sharp, funny demeanor make it an appealing friend for almost anyone. The Rat likes to know who is on its side and will treat its most loyal friends with an extra measure of protection and generosity.

Behind that sweet smile, though, Rats are keen and unapologetic promoters of their own agendas. This Sign is motivated by its own interests, which often include money; greed can become a problem if the Rat isn't careful to keep its priorities straight. This Sign's natural powers of charm and persuasion can definitely come in handy! Although they are often hoarders, Rats can be very generous to those in their pack, namely friends and family members who have proven their loyalty. Others might perceive them as quick-tempered and sharp-tongued, but never boorish. Verbal jousting is a great pleasure for the Rat, a Sign that everyone around will quickly learn either to love or to hate.

Rats enjoy being on the outside looking in, as the outside affords a view into the inner workings of a system or situation. The Rat's keen mind always seeks out new knowledge, to be stored away for future use. This ever-curious Sign also welcomes challenges as a way to stay sharp. If boredom sets in the Rat is no fun at all, but that isn't likely; this Sign knows how to keep itself entertained.

A valuable lesson for Rats is to learn to consider others above themselves, at least sometimes. If they can develop their sense of self and realize it leaves room for others in their life as well, Rats could find true happiness.

What do Avril Lavigne and Bad Pet Food have in common?

It's all about six degrees of seperation:

-Avril Lavigne "starred" in Fast Food Nation.

-Fast Food nation was about the poor quality of fast food that we consume on a daily basis!

-We have pets.

-Pets eat food

-And that food can harm our pets!

Malnutrition can often be the leading cause of both disease and premature death for us and our beloved pets. After Author Andrew Lewis' dog, Noble, died of malnutrition, Andrew went to discover the horrible truth of what pet food really means in his book "Dog Food Secrets."

Andrew Lewis not only confidently educates but also arms you with the essential knowledge you need to guard yourself against the terrible possibility of unwittingly "poisoning" your dog with the food you feed him...( for more on this amazing book click here.)

A Long Joke:

As an elderly lady sat on her front porch reflecting on her long life, a Fairy Godmother suddenly appeared and offered to fulfill three wishes for her.

"Well," said the woman, "I guess I'd like to be rich."
POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned her rocking chair into solid gold.

"And I wouldn't mind being a young and beautiful princess."
POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned the old woman into an exquisite young princess, with a priceless crown of jewels.

"Your third wish?" asked the Fairy Godmother. "Could you possibly turn my wonderful dog into a handsome prince?"
POOF: There, in front stood the most handsome young man anyone had ever seen. She stared at him in awe, completely smitten.

As he came toward her, her knees weakened. He bent down, brushing his lips across her ear as he whispered, "I bet you are sorry you had me neutered."

Sex (kind of), Lies and Your Pet!

If you're a parent you're probably guilty of this, and if you're not then its probably been done to you! Simple little white lies to explain the universe, simply because it's easier than going into the details.

Why do parents do this?

What they mean: Eat your vegetables because it is part of a well-balanced meal.
What they say: Eat grapes, they make your eyes pretty.

What they mean: Don't buy candy and ice cream because it's a waste of money and sugar rots your teeth.
What they say: The ice cream man puts drugs in the candy. (Well at least that's what my mom said!)

And I've also heard this little white lie: For every one human year, a dog ages seven years.

I admit I too have fallen victim to this vicious vicious lie. But if this were true that would mean that in one of our human years, when the dog is technically only a seven year old-they hit puberty and are able to procreate? Those are some hulk-like hormones!

But there is a way to measure how old your pet is! The LeBeaus system ( named after its French founder) determines the age of the dog in human years based on what happens to them biologically.

Human Years vs. Dog/Cat Years

1 15- because they hit puberty
2 24- full maturity

Then, for every human year after that, the dog/cat would age 4 years per one human year.

However, this would be pretty hard to explain to a four year old who just got a new puppy. Then you would have to explain puberty and "procreation"...... Hmm.. maybe those white lies aren't so bad after all! Hey we all turned out fine right?
