Todays Begins Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog-Month

Click the picture to visit Planet-Pets.com's pet adoption center directory

This is a quick but extremely important reminder that today marks the beginning of Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. This past year, homeless pets have been helpless victims of the spiraling economy and housing market, making this a more critical time than ever to adopt or foster.
If you are planning any stories on pet adoption, there are currently more than 140,000 dogs listed on Petfinder.com and Planet-Pets.com, with a network that now includes more than 11,900 animal shelters and rescue groups across the country, and over 300,000 total adoptable pets.

If you have the means and the heart, please take action and adopt a loving pet that deserves a good home. You can make a difference.

New Technology by Eureka for Pet Owners

So you want to have some fun in the sun while your cat stays at home? Of course, like any responsible pet owner you get someone to look after your cat, pet it, feed it, make sure there's water in their bowl, but do you ever ask a pet-sitter to vaccuum while you're away?

Chances are probably not, so while you still have a healthy little kitty you now also have a huge furball that used to be your home. That's exactly why Eureka will be introducing the Boss 4D Pet Fresh Vacuum. A 25 pound high-powered upright with rubber teethed "Pet Power Paw" power brush to removing pet hair from furniture AND a sealed HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of dander and dust with Arm & Hammer baking soda embedded into the vacuum's filter helps combat pet smells.

Definetely a high-end product--with a high end price: $125

Sound worth it?

4th of July!!!... almost

Petfinder.com is a great place to go if you're looking to buy a pet, they also give some great advice on how to keep your pet safe and calm during the fireworks this year:

  • Keep your pets indoors with the windows closed and air conditioner running or a radio on to help mask out as much noise as possible.
  • Allow your pets the freedom to seek refuge under the bed, behind the toilet or in the back of the closet without dragging them out to stroke them and murmur "it's okay." For many animals, that well-meant reassurance is the first step in establishing a serious phobia.
  • If your pet gets especially stressed or your neighborhood is particularly noisy, you may wish to talk to your veterinarian about the practicality of using tranquilizers or homeopathic remedies such as rock rose, mimulus or rescue remedy. In severe cases, you might consider sending your pet to a nice quiet country boarding kennel for the worst of it.

Have a good one!!

Summer Travel with your Pet Cat!

It's summer time! That mean's its time for (even higher gas prices) and travel. But traveling with pets can be tricky, so it's important to be properly prepared. Here are some tips on traveling with your cat(s).

1) Plastic or wire pet carrier

DON'T get a cardboard carrier, these can be chewed through quickly so the plastic and wire carriers are worth the investment. Either way, you definitely need to place your cat in a carrier, because they're sly little devils and you don't want them slipping in and out behind the seats, or under the brake pedal.

2) Place the carrier on a seat next to you if you can. If you place the cat on the floor the noises of the car can be scary for your feline. Make sure the cat is secured in a car seat and can feel the air conditioning. You want to make traveling as stress free for your cat as possible, it is going to be stuck in a box for a while.

3) Food, water, litter, a pan, a scoop and disposable bags. Pets are like our children, we would bring the same things if we were traveling with an infant. ( litter excluded)

Small Rusy Spotted Cats from India

I found a great article from expressindia.com, here's the gist of it:

World’s smallest, highly threatened kitten are being raised in Borivali Park

Here's some good news for cat lovers. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), Borivali, is hand-raising two rusty spotted cats, the world’s smallest feline — and a rare species — that they rescued from forests a year ago.

SGNP officials now hope to breed the animals in captivity.

Found only in India and Sri Lanka, the rustys are “vulnerable species considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild”...Weighing a maximum weight of 1.5 kg and between 35 and 48 cm body length, they are smaller albeit fiercer than their lesser cousins, the domestic cats.

The wild rustys’ staple diet is insects, reptiles and small birds, but their captive food is mostly chicken.

Their diminutive looks are deceptive: they hiss, spit and bring out their claws when you get close. And they don’t mew.

The female was found in Tungareshwar in November 2005, abandoned by their mother. She was around three weeks old and the chances of saving her looked bleak. A few months later the cub had company. Another male cub was rescued in August 2006 from the Yeoor forest.

Animal keeper Mukesh More worked hard rearing the cats. “He treated them as his children. At nights he’d stay awake to feed them every two hours. For warmth, he placed a 60-watt bulb next to them,” he says.

However, More remembers how Anjali fought death twice. “Once her body temperature dropped from the normal 101.5 degree Fahrenheit to 95 degrees. We had to perch her atop a hot water bag for warmth. Medicines were given with a syringe. But after three weeks, she recovered and began having milk, chicken soup and shredded chicken,” he says.

The doctor has more plans for the animals: “We are waiting for the pair to mate. Considering that they are high risk animals, we’d like to raise their cubs here”. However, these felines aren't for show, yet. Right now efforts are concentrated purely on conservation.

Wheelchairs for Disabled Pets

A friend recently sent me this great article "Wheelchairs keep disables pets moving"

Our pets always brighten our day and make living a little more enjoyable, so when they're sick or need more care as they get older it's our time to return the favor.

That's what "Wheelchairs keep disabled pets moving" was all about.

Here's a little excerpt:

Eddie and Leslie Grinnell, founders of Eddie's Wheels, built their first pet wheelchair in 1989 when their 10-year-old Doberman, Buddha, lost the use of her rear legs because of disc disease and spinal problems.

Their veterinarian, impressed by Buddha's revived mobility and vitality, started referring others to the Grinnells. In 1998, they started their own business.

Since launching the business, Eddie's Wheels has shipped carts worldwide — the largest to a 220-pound Saint Bernard in Great Britain — and has made wheelchairs for several cats, a ferret, alpacas, goats, sheep, a rabbit and a possum.

They even keep a supply of tiny wheels on hand for a gerbil or hamster.

I would love to see a picture of a gerbil or hamster using a set of these tiny wheels..anyone have a picture?

Cat Vs Dog on Nintendo Wii

I didn't really know if this was real or not the first time I watched.I kept trying to see if there were wires tied to the pets' arms but I couldn't see any. Well, if pets take after their owners, and these pets owners are male ages 18-36 I guess I shouldn't be too surprised right?

How does your pet take after you?

Cat Lovers Get the Best of Both Worlds

Hampstead is a suburbs in London, it is also the home of Possum. Possum is a famous rare and exotic breed of cat and it will be at the CFA cat show March 15.

Why did I say it?

What makes Possum so unique is that Possum is male and femal
e!

The feline is a Chimera. A Chimera is a rare genetic offspring which is born when two zygotes that would have usually created two kittens, instead combine in the womb to create only one. While this isn't uncommon in the animal world, it is very rare for cats.

Want to meet Possum yourself? Go to the Schwartz Center March 15, 9am-5pm. Too far? Get your cat fix at CutePicturesofCats.com!
