Click the picture to visit Planet-Pets.com's pet adoption center directory

This is a quick but extremely important reminder that today marks the beginning of Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. This past year, homeless pets have been helpless victims of the spiraling economy and housing market, making this a more critical time than ever to adopt or foster.
If you are planning any stories on pet adoption, there are currently more than 140,000 dogs listed on Petfinder.com and Planet-Pets.com, with a network that now includes more than 11,900 animal shelters and rescue groups across the country, and over 300,000 total adoptable pets.

If you have the means and the heart, please take action and adopt a loving pet that deserves a good home. You can make a difference.

Animal Shelter: Share the Love

I love puppies. I love kittens. Basically, everything is better when its tiny, cute and small. BUT, there are so many older pets that need a home!

The Animal Center in Santa Maria is inviting the public to spend some quality time with some of these needy animals in their "Share The Love" pet adoption event.

"Over a hundred animals up for adoption right now," said Stacy Crump, Commumity Outreach Coordinator."We encourage people to come down take a look at what we have spend some quality time with that animal to make sure you are making the right decision, and make sure that dog or cat is right for you're family," said Stacy.

All you need to do is spend a day playing with adorable pets, fill out an application and take your pick!

"The last thing we want is one of these guys to get comfortable in a home and have to come back," comments Stacy as she pet's Sam, a pet up for adoption.

Santa Barbara County shelters hope to becoming a no kill animal shelter, but that can only happen with YOUR HELP!

Forget those yucky chalky hearts, give someone the gift of a furry best friend!

Thinking of Pet Adoption? Rent First!

Rent a dog for a few hours or even a weekend.

This is a great way to try out different breeds, or to see if your family can handle the responsibility. Each dog is therapy certified and is fully trained, I think the only problem would be letting them go!

So far, I've only found FlexPetz to service in the USA with locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. But don't worry! They're expanding to Manhattan, San Francisco, London in UK, Boston, and Washington DC in 2008.

Adopting a Celebrity Dog

I read an interesting story this weekend about a beautiful Golden retriever that had been traveling up and down a six mile section of Highway 10, here in Los Angeles, nursing a broken leg for nearly TWO months! Highway patrol, concerned citizens and animal rescuers had attempted numerous rescues but to no avail. Then one lucky patrol officer was able to coax the retriever they had since named "Oleander," into the back of his patrol car and off they sped to a Riverside County Department of Animal Services shelter in Banning.
The interesting part of this story is that within two days for announcing that Oleander was up for adoption, this media-hyped puppy had received 90 calls of willing parties and even 10 calls of people claiming to be the dog's rightful owner!
What's sad about this situation is that Oleander is just one of thousands of pets in shelters right now, and simply because she was on the news, people responded. It was her celebrity that people wanted.

An interesting quote I found in the LA Times, "Getting an animal on television is a guaranteed adoption," said Ed Boks, the general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services, which runs six city shelters. "I think it has to do, perhaps, with an affinity with fame. A lot of folks want to touch that celebrity status through adopting the animal that everyone now wants."
I suppose it really is just another case of "A crowd attracts a crowd."
Where does this obsessive celebrity mindset come from? Frankly it's all kind of lost on me. And that's a funny thing to say when you live in Tinseltown - Hollywood, California.
