Pet Care: Make a Trust in Case of Sickness ( or Death)

Taking care of your pet is our number one concern and I thought we've covered everything: fashion, accessories, travel, kennels, sitters, insurance, etc. But I came across something that I'm surprised I haven't heard of before: a trust for your pet.

These trusts guarantee that your pet will be taken care in the event that you may not be able to, such as vacation, incapacitation or (knock on wood) death. A trust can detail anything from who will be the day-to-day caretaker, to what measures you would want to take if your pet falls ill. Like wills, they can be amended at any time.

Check with your state for what guidelines there are. For example, Wisconsin law prohibits owners from leaving money directly to an animal, but they can be left to a trustee or caretaker.

But New York has no such limitation and New York real estate billionaire Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her white Maltese, Trouble. Yea, 12 MILLION.

This is a great way to try out different breeds, or to see if your family can handle the responsibility.Each dog is therapy certified and is fully trained, I think the only problem would be letting them go!

So far, I've only found FlexPetz to service in the USA with locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. But don't worry! They're expanding to Manhattan, San Francisco, London in UK, Boston, and Washington DC in 2008.

"I'm sorry for what I've done...."

The saga and epic downfall of Michael Vick continues... After having refuted any involvement with the alleged dog fighting on his Virginia compound, M. Vick has now coughed up the goods and pleaded guilty. Just in time to find Jesus and seek forgiveness for what he's done.
I don't know what's worse? Being now looked at as a monster by most Americans? Being suspended indefinitely from the Falcons and having them litigate you for the 20 some odd million dollars in bonuses they paid you on your $130 million dollar contract? (That hurts to even think about... what an idiot) Or having to spend the possibility of 5 years in prison?
I just can't seem to find a soft spot for this guy. He had it all - was living the dream. Then he went too far and now it's ALL gone. I just can't summon any sympathy.
Can't you blame me?

Lights Are Bright on Pet Fashion Week in New York City...

This week saw the beginning of the second annual Pet Fashion Week in New York City, NY. With every design from high-end couture to gold, jewel encrusted leashes and collars on display, the highlight of this week was the pet fashion show. It lasted for an hour or so and featured designs from over 20 different pet fashion houses. Now that's entertainment!


Most of the pets that participated in the show were dogs, although there was one black cat that dawned her strut on what is appropriately named "the catwalk." Maybe that's why the dog in the above picture didn't want to step out on to the stage :)


With the show being held on the fifth floor of this Manhattan exhibition building, on the first and fourth floors, you could find exhibits from all kinds of varieties of pet businesses serving up products like vitamins, pet furniture, and various luxury pet apparel.


Buyers from pet companies worldwide were there to check out what was "hot", and bring back the newest and best products for their customers. The pet industry is worth some $US40 billion a year, including:

• $US16 billion in pet food,
  
• $US20 billion in veterinarian bills and medicine,
• $US4 billion in toys, clothes and dog-sitters.
