Round 1!

PETA's Side: Breeders and pet stores steal homes for orphaned pets in shelters

AKC's Side: Our pets are cute and we deserve an award!

The Return of Toto!

Toto, celebrated Sci Fi channel's new mini series "Tin Man" recently in LA. His date, Zooey Deschanel, Toto's co-star who plays that one character... what was her name?

What breed is Toto?
While opinions and descriptions of Toto vary in the books, the fact is that Toto in Judy Garland's 1939 version was a Cairn Terrier.

LIES LIES LIES!
Unlike his character in the movie, Cairn Terriers can actually be very jumpy, aggressive and unwilling to listen most of the time. Well, actually that was kind of Toto's character, maybe that's why that wicked old witch was after him too!

Want a Pet Leopard?

Well I wouldn't mind! Lifestyle Pets is developing a new breed of cat, part Asian leopard and part US domestic.

More to Love!
These hybrid felines are more aggressive, out-going, can live up to 25 years and weigh about 40 pounds when fully grown!

And they definetly cost more too. These cats cost about 22-28,000 US dollars, if you can make it through that long waiting list.

Would you drink rat's milk?

Wow. Well I love the planet, but I'm not sure if I love it as much as animal rights activist Heather Mills. In London Hyde Park, Mills reportedly promoted a billboard to support vegetarianism. Mill's argument: "The startling truth is that animals farmed for meat and dairy are now one of the greatest threats to the planet... Why don't we drink rat's milk or cat's milk or dog's milk?"

I don't think the question is why don't we, I think it's more about would we? Take our quiz!

We Salute: the Pomeranian!

Fun Facts about this tiny dog, with a big history:

The Pomeranian's ancestors originated in Greenland and Lapland where they were used as sled dogs!(Yes they were a lot bigger, about 20 pounds bigger than today) They were then taken to Europe in Pomerania where breeders focused on improving thier coats and breeding them to be more suitable for city living. But if you love how they fit perfectly in your lap, you owe your thanks to the English.

Characteristics:

The Pomeranian makes a great friend and watchdog because of its alertness and intelligence. But beware, this breed is known for its feistiness and at times being stubborn. This breed definetely needs a lot of love and attention.

Pomeranian Vocabulary:

Balanced Pomeranian- The head and legs are in porportion to the body.

Do you love Mr. Muggles on ABC's Heros? Read this on why a Pomeranian is stronger than a regenerating cheerleader or a flying politician.

Britney Spears is in PETA's Doghouse

Britney Spears has been attacked a lot this year: the disaster that happened at the VMA's, the ugly divorce, the constant attention from the press, and even PETA is saying Britney is so unstable she isn't even fit to care for her dogs! PETA even went so far as to send a letter to Kevin Federline and tell him to not only get custody of the kids, but of her dogs too! Ouch.

Do you think PETA went too far?

Dangerous Dogs = Serious Crime

Bad guy alert! Above is 22 year old Ibrar Banaras who recently admitted to three counts of possessing illegal dogs and was found guilty of a forth count after a trial yesterday! That's four counts and he's barely drinking age!

One of the ten dogs was said to be a veritable "cocktail" of viciousness, cross bred between dogs known for aggressiveness like pit bull and American bulldog.

Now, I don’t blame the court for punishing Ibrar, but all the dogs are “to be destroyed.” What do you guys think? Is that really necessary? Is there no other way?

Crazy Costumed Canines! - Planet-Pets TV Episode 4

This month’s episode of Planet Pets TV is part two of our report from the 7th Annual Haute Dog Howl’oween Parade in Long Beach, California. The 12-block sidewalk parade took place on Second St. between Roycroft and Granada Avenues and we were there to capture all the insanity!!! More than 550 dogs last year helped to raise more than $10,000! More costumed dogs were definitely there this year!!

This event was attended by over 4,000 people, and we had a great time getting “the scoop” from them all on location. This really did turn out to be the spookiest Planet Pets TV episode yet!

Kudos to Selma Blair!

Pictured here is Selma Blair with her ultra hot boyfriend Matthew Felker and her ultra cute dog Wink! Wink isn't your average hollywood 600$ tea-cup chihuahua, no sir-ee. This cutie is a Jack Russel Mutt adopted from the Lange Foundation, dedicated to saving impounded pets. My favorite thing about Wink- he only has one eye! Awww.

Selma definetly sees past the hollywood fads of pedigree dogs. "You want a three-legged dog with a wheel chair or a dog that has no bowel control, that’s the place to go. There are amazing dogs,” she’s said.

I think I definetely like Selma just a little bit more, almost enough to watch her new movie, the sequel to Hellboy-almost.

Jessica Simpson's Daisy

Daisy is Jessica Simpson's dog named no doubt after her character in Dukes of Hazzard. Daisy is a Malti-poo, a mix of a Maltese and a Poodle. Jessica was given Daisy by her then-hubby Nick Lachey during a concert on her 24th birthday. (Insert Newly Wed Joke here)

But seriously, Malti-poos are great! They are known for thier mild temperament, being hypoallergenic AND they barely shed. Owners say that the only hair that sheds comes off when brushing.

Kudos to Diane Keaton

It sounds like a dog fairytale, or more like a canine rendition of Annie. A lone dog wandering the streets of Austin gets picked up by a mysterious stranger, only that mysterious stranger is Academy-Award winning actress Diane Keaton!

Red, or the luckiest dog on earth, now lives with Diane in her new home in Beverly Hills. Red is not only lucky because he has a super star sugar momma like Diane, but because he's lived to the ripe old age of 16.

But Red isn't the only animal Diane has rescued. She has been the spokeswoman for "Iams Home 4 the Holiays" animal adoption campaign for the last 6 years. It is an international organization used to get as many pets adopted from the shelter during the holidays as possible.

For Diane's full phone interview and a picture of the real Red ( sorry that's not him above, but just another dog that Diane has shown some love to) click here.

Pushing Daisies Scores Cool Points

Who loves Pushing Daisies on Wednesdays on ABC? I DO! In case you missed this week's show, especially you dog-lovers, you really missed out. This show is about a man named Ned whose first touch can bring the dead back to life, but one more means they go back to being dead-forever!

This week's episode was all about dog breeders and their dogs. A breeder had created the ultimate cross breed
between a collie, a labrador, a russell, and a pomapoo, or "Coll-A-Dor-Russell-A-Poo." Kind of a mouthful huh? I guess that's why the dog's name on the show was Bubblegum! In case you dog lovers aren't already setting your Tivo, one of the first people that Ned brought back to life was his childhood dog "Digbee."

But I have to admit, episodes on network TV don't have enough dogs in them ( except for the human kind). So to get your dog TV fix click here for the latest episode of Planet-Pets TV and the Haute Dog Pageant.

Pets Going Green and Saving the Earth

You think you’re doing your job right? You walk your dog, you buy a litter box and you scoop the poop and swoosh, into the trash. That’s it right? That’s what I thought too. But if that bag you’re constantly swooshing poo or litter in is non-biodegradable it will spend thousands of years with you know what still inside. Yech. The good news is that instead of the trash, we can swoosh into the toilet. Flush. The bad news, kitty litter should never be flushed because it has a certain organism toxoplasma gondii that can cause disease in sea life and humans. Here are just some of the tips to going green with your pet.

-Make sure you know what meat source is used for your pet food and that it is gotten in humane ways.

-Try to buy food in packaging that is recyclable

-Don’t skimp on the toys. Badly made (but cheap) toys often just land up in a dump. So open that wallet a little wider, it’ll be worth it in the long run for all of us.

-Every pet needs exercise, so instead of revving up that engine to go to a park or pet store, put on some sun block and take a nice stroll. You’ll be killing two birds with one stone. ( Sorry to all you bird-lovers)

-Dispose of all mediation properly, they're chemicals too.

Dogs Help You Lose Weight

Patti Lawson is the author of “The Dog Diet,” a witty memoir about gaining a dog and losing 30 pounds. Plagued with doubts about her career and heartbroken by the end of a long love affair, Patti turned to two men she always counted on. Ben & Jerry. She ate. Oh yea, she ate. She also got a part cocker spaniel, part German shepherd puppy named Sadie.

Her vet said not to give Sadie any junk food, but just like Patti, that’s all that Sadie craved. Every time Patti whipped out a Big Mac or some java chip ice cream her puppy would jump up on her and try to nose her way through. The only solution: Patti had to change her own diet to be more nutritious.

This book includes recipes, meal plans and how playing with Sadie or doing “Dogercise” helped Patti regain her self confidence and herself. I think the main message of this book can be summed up in a quote by the author herself in an interview with azstarnet.com. "I went out and adopted a dog, but she rescued me," Lawson said. "All of a sudden, I wasn't the center of my world."

Fun Animal Fact: Mighty Mice

I've always wished life was more like a cartoon, and now I think scientists in Tokyo have taken us one step closer to my dream. Mice are actually afraid of cats because of a reaction triggered by a cat's scent, by genetically altering mice's sense of smell scientists have taken away that fear! What could be next? A flying elephant? One can only dream.

Coyote Attacks

Just a fair warning to all pet lovers. I've been reading some articles about increased coyote sightings. Apparently, coyotes are getting used to being around humans which means they're not afraid to get close enough to attack one of our pets. While they're not a threat to humans there have sadly been reports of hurt or killed pets. But there are preventative measures we can all take. Watch your pets during the early morning and dusk hours, when coyotes are on the hunt. Also make sure not to leave food out to attract them. More tips on living with coyotes can be found here.

What Should I Feed my Pet?

As seen in this episode of Planet-Pets TV one of the latest hot topics for dog owners is what kind of food to use. Before the battle was between canned or dried, but now we have the choices of cooking for our furry friends, going organic or using a raw diet. While organic is more of a personal preference, the raw diet runs the risk of salmonella for both us and our dogs. Another option is supplementing your dog's diet with vitamins. Studies have shown there might… (MIGHT) be a link between certain vitamins and improvement in bones, pain relief and memory but nothing for sure-yet. But wait! Before you ransack the nearest pet store for a One-A-Day for dogs rest easy and know that many companies have taken note and are already jacking up the vitamins in their food, so read the labels and make sure you don’t overdose your doggie with too much of a good thing.

Pet Care Tip of the Day

Obesity is a problem for everyone, including your pet. Instead of giving your cat or dog a processed treat, try finding a vegetable they like and cutting it up for treats instead. And the best part, no more springing for an over-priced ( and over processed) treat!

Why is my dog's nose wet?

Your dog's nose isn't just wet to greet with you wet kisses, but to help him smell better too. Thier moist whiffers act like Velcro, sticking to even the smallest tidbits of smells, and then soaking them in so the dog's internal smell-receptors can interpret them. Our furry friends can smell week old fingerprints and even electricity. Wow!

Puggles: huggable or trouble?

It’s like cotton candy ice-cream or chocolate covered gummy bears. The idea is simple, you take one good thing and put it with another good thing, and now you got one really good thing. In case you haven’t been swept up by the doggy fad of 2005, puggles are what you get when you put a pug and a beagle together. These cuties really caught on when they (surprisingly) caught the eyes of celebrity tough guys like Sylvester Stallone and Tony Soprano [James Gandolfini]. But like all fads it’s Buyer Beware. Don’t let the name fool you, these are not lazy docile pugs. While they are good dogs for children and behave around other dogs, they have often proven too hyper active for some owners. One thing is for sure, these pups take after the beagle side of their family.
