Introducing the African Pygmy Hedgehog

First there was the chihuahua, then the toy poodle, what's the next biggest craze?

Well if Americans take their cure from the UK ( which seems likely since every hit American TV show was originally a UK hit) the next trendy pet is...... ( drum roll)

The African Pygmy Hedgehog!!!

Huh??

These cuties have become so popular in Britain that people are on waiting lists just to buy a little pygmy which can cost nearly $400.

"When they become used to you they will 'unball' and drop their spikes, allowing you to stroke them as you would any other pet. It's immensely rewarding," said Bonnie Martin, 36, a pygmy hedgehog breeder from Fairford, Gloucestershire, England.

One drawback?The mothers eat their own young which can make it difficult to breed. Blech!

Pet Law Changes in Manhattan

Watch out Manhattan! Animal control ordinance laws are being updated from their 1928 versions.

What are the proposed revisions:

- Every residence is only allowed 4 pets. But if you currently have more, you can keep them, but can not replace them.
-No livestock, wild, undomesticated or exotic animals
-Dog walkers must carry bags (for poo!) and must immediately dispose of the "said poo."
-Required $1 license fee and inoculations
-Citations will be given if debris or odors on their own property become a health hazard. (That would take a lot of poo!)
-Dogs caught running at large a second time must be spayed or neutered within 30 days, to make them less aggressive.

Sugar Gliders, Hottest New Pet or Bad Fad?

What is a Sugar Glider? They are pocket-size flying possums that love the sweet stuff. But there are arguments whether or not these pets are ideal for everybody. I'll present both sides of the story, and let you decide:

Sweet: They bond with the owner very quickly, and love being near your heart beat or entwined around your thumb.

Sour: They are wild animals that glide from branch to branch and are not made for living in small cages for hours alone.

Sweet: As with any pet, you have to clean the cage and them, and just as with their size, their droppings are very small.

Sour: They are, let's say "blessed" with healthy, very healthy sweat glands.

Sweet: They adjust thier sleeping patterns to accomodate thier owners

Sour: They are nocturnal, so when you're ready to doze off they're getting ready to party

Sweet:They can't survive outside, making them perfect pets

Sour: It is feared they could spread unknown diseases to local animals
