Sex (kind of), Lies and Your Pet!

If you're a parent you're probably guilty of this, and if you're not then its probably been done to you! Simple little white lies to explain the universe, simply because it's easier than going into the details.

Why do parents do this?

What they mean: Eat your vegetables because it is part of a well-balanced meal.
What they say: Eat grapes, they make your eyes pretty.

What they mean: Don't buy candy and ice cream because it's a waste of money and sugar rots your teeth.
What they say: The ice cream man puts drugs in the candy. (Well at least that's what my mom said!)

And I've also heard this little white lie: For every one human year, a dog ages seven years.

I admit I too have fallen victim to this vicious vicious lie. But if this were true that would mean that in one of our human years, when the dog is technically only a seven year old-they hit puberty and are able to procreate? Those are some hulk-like hormones!

But there is a way to measure how old your pet is! The LeBeaus system ( named after its French founder) determines the age of the dog in human years based on what happens to them biologically.

Human Years vs. Dog/Cat Years

1 15- because they hit puberty
2 24- full maturity

Then, for every human year after that, the dog/cat would age 4 years per one human year.

However, this would be pretty hard to explain to a four year old who just got a new puppy. Then you would have to explain puberty and "procreation"...... Hmm.. maybe those white lies aren't so bad after all! Hey we all turned out fine right?
