While opinions and descriptions of Toto vary in the books, the fact is that Toto in Judy Garland's 1939 version was a Cairn Terrier.

Unlike his character in the movie, Cairn Terriers can actually be very jumpy, aggressive and unwilling to listen most of the time. Well, actually that was kind of Toto's character, maybe that's why that wicked old witch was after him too!

Question: What breed is Toto in the SciFi miniseries?
Obviously the person who wrote that Cairn terriers are jumpy does not know them. They can sack out with the best of dogs 23 hours a day, but if you want activity, you just need a toy or a walk. They are bred to be independent and are not afraid of animals larger than they are. Witness Toto biting the Lion! Very brave dogs, bred to go into tunnels after rats, fox, otter, etc. Work with other terriers. A thinking person's dog.
